Newtown’s Nathan Taylor finished third at the Ironman Tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio at Walsh Jesuit High School on Sunday at 190 pounds. Taylor, who is wrestling for Greens Farms Academy in Westport, went 6-1 in the tournament, winning a 5-1 decision over Jarrell Miller of St. Edward in Ohio to take third.
Taylor, the top seed in the tournament, won his first four matches with two decisions and two major decisions before dropping a 3-2 decision to Jake Dailey of Wyoming Seminary in the semifinals.
Taylor had a 2-0 lead after one period thanks to a takedown with 32 seconds left in the period. But Dailey got an escape and a takedown of his own in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Dailey rode out the third period to secure the win.
Greens Farms Ben Zuckerman (132) went 3-2 in the tournament with a pin and a shutout victory. Zuckerman went 2-1 in the consolation round. Newtown freshman Brigton Karvoski (106) went 2-2 in the tournament for Greens Farms. Karvoski had a pair of pins.
Organizers say the tournament is one of the deepest high school tournaments in the country.
In the girls tournament, Southbury’s Sarah Henckel of Blair Academy (New Jersey) had a tough day. She went 1-2 with a pin.
