Sacred Heart finishes dual meet season with pair of dominating victories

No. 7 Sacred Heart finished the dual meet season with a pair of convincing victories over Columbia and Western New England University at the Pitt Center on Wednesday in Fairfield.

The Pioneers (17-4) rolled to a 45-8 win over Columbia and a 44-5 win over a depleted Western New England University team that had just four wrestlers.

Sacred Heart remained at No. 7 in the nation in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s NCAA women’s dual meet poll. In the NWCA’s tournament rankings, the Pioneers slipped two spots to No. 10.

Sacred Heart, only in their second varsity season, has three nationally ranked wrestlers. Plymouth’s Cara Broadus is ranked No. 5 at 170 pounds with Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101) and Alexandra Fitzgerald (136) are both ranked No. 7 in their respective weight classes.

Up next for the Pioneers is the Region I championship, Feb. 18 at Gannon University with the top qualifers advancing to the national championship tournament on March 3-4 in Iowa.
