Plymouth’s Cara Broadus pinned No. 6 Jewell Gonzalez at 170 pounds and Madison Sandquist (155) and Jacklyn Smith (191) picked up decisions to lift the No. 8 Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team over Gannon University, 24-23 on Saturday in Louisville at the NWCA National Duals championship tournament.

The Pioneers (13-4) won the final three bouts of the match to beat No. 9 Gannon and finish seventh. Top-ranked Kings College beat No. 2 North Central College to win the tournament.

Sacred Heart won three of five matches in the tournament. The Pioneers beat Emmanuel College from Georgia in their first round match on Friday, 38-17 before North Central College bounced Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals, 38-7.

Sacred Heart won their first consolation round bout with a 35-11 win over Wisconsin -Stevens Point to set up a match with No. 7 Presbyterian College from South Carolina – the first-ever dual meet between two Division I women’s wrestling programs.

Against Presbyterian, the Pioneers dug themselves too big of a deficit as they trailed 17-1 after the first four bouts. No. 6 Alexandra Fitzgerald stopped the run by recording a 10-0 tech fall for the Pioneers against Sierra Maire Miller. Unfortunately, Presbyterian won the next two contests to secure the team victory despite two forfeits and another Broadus pin in the last three matches.

The Pioneers return home on January 15 to face No. 18 Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
