No. 14 Pioneers close out dual meet season with winning record

The No. 14 Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team closed out their first dual meet season with a win and a loss Sunday at Lock Haven University.

The Pioneers (6-4) had two pins and picked up three forfeits in a 25-9 win over Hiram College.

In the second mat of the afternoon, East Stroudsburg State picked up 15 points on three forfeits and outlasted the Pioneers, 25-17. In the six bouts contested on the mat, Sacred Heart outscored East Stroudsburg, 17-12.

Southington freshman Ashley Reed (191) finished the dual meet undefeated at 8-0 thanks to a 6-0 decision over East Stroudsburg’s Shola Cascan and her sixth pin of the season in a 49 second win over Hiram’s JoRee Ybarra.

Reed, who is ranked No. 6 in the country at 191 pounds, is currently 12-3 overall.

Freshman Madison Sandquist, who is ranked No. 8 in the country at 143, picked up a pair of wins at 155 to finish the dual meet season with an 8-2 record. She picked up a forfeit win against Hiram and pinned Rachel DeGiulio of East Stroudsburg State in 48 seconds. It was the sixth pin of the year for Sandquist, who is 18-5 overall.

Sacred Heart’s Jacklyn Smith, a freshman from Bridgeport, picked up a pair of pins and finished the dual meet season with a 5-1 record. She is 10-7 overall.

Savannah Vanage, the freshman from NFA, won two matches at 136 pounds with a forfeit and a tech fall win over East Stroudsburg’s Avery Meyers.

With the dual meet season behind them, the Pioneers, who are ranked No. 14 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s (NWCA) team rankings (NCAA Division), will compete on Sunday at the Northeast Regional championship meet at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.

The top five finishers in each weight class will advance to the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) championship meet at Adrian (Mich.) College on March 4-5.
