Camacho, Jack win as No. 4 North Carolina State routs Virginia

Danbury High graduates Jakob Camacho and Ryan Jack each earned victories as No. 4 North Carolina State rolled to a 32-2 win over Virginia at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh on Friday night in front of nearly 1,800 fans.

The Wolfpack (3-0) won nine of ten bouts to secure the win.

The dual started at 125 pounds, with the Pack scoring bonus points. Camacho, who is ranked No. 14 in the country at 125, got all five takedowns of the bout, and added in 2:10 of ride time, for a 12-3 major decision over Virginia’s Patrick McCormick.

At 141 pounds, Jack, who is ranked No. 24 in the country, got a takedown in the first period and used 1:39 of riding time for a 4-3 decision over Dylan Cedeno to give the Pack a 10-0 lead.

In the first match between two ranked wrestlers, North Carolina State’s Kai Orine (No. 15) used a used a six-point move in third period to score a 10-4 decision at 133 pounds.

At 149 pounds, No. 3 Tariq Wilson of NC State used a takedown in the first period and 1:58 of ride time to claim a 5-1 decision over No. 30 Jarod Verkleeren.

The Cavs scored their first win at 157 pounds. After a six-point mover by No. 10 Ed Scott, in the second period, No. 29 Jake Keating used three takedowns in the third for the 11-10 comeback win. UVA was deducted a team point during the 157 bout and it was 13-2 at the break.

The Pack got its third ranked win at 165 pounds, as No. 21 Thomas Bullard scored the only takedown of the bout with 54 seconds left, and added ride time, to down the previously unbeaten No. 17 Justin McCoy 4-1.

No. 4 Hayden Hidlay (174) had a 14-0 lead before he won by a pin with five seconds left in the first period. NC State teammate and brother No. 3 Trent Hidlay (184) scored six takedowns and added 2:52 of ride time for a 16-5 major decision over No. 25 Michael Battista.

It was an upset at 197 pounds, as  No. 20 Isaac Trumble scored the winning takedown with 21 seconds left in OT to earn a 7-5 decision over No. 13 Jay Aiello of Virginia.

In the final battle, another match of ranked wrestlers, No. 26 Tyrie Houghton scored the winning takedown with just 24 seconds left to defeat No. 30 Quinn  Miller 4-2.

In exhibition matches, No. 29 Jake Keating of Virginia outlasted Danbury native A.J. Kovacs at 157 pounds, 3-2.
