The Sacred Heart women’s wrestling team had an historic day on Saturday picking up the first dual meet victory in team history with an 18-16 win over No. 14 New Jersey City University in Lock Haven, Penn.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 11 in the latest national NCAA women’s wrestling coaches poll, got a pin from Southington’s Ashley Reed at 191 pounds to win the dual meet. Reed, ranked No. 6 in the country, pinned No. 7 ranked Sandy Guerreto in 2:23 to give the Pioneers the two-point win.

Savannah Vanase had the team’s first dual meet victory with a 10-4 win over Kayla Zeppetelli at 136 points with Tays Pascual (143) getting the team’s first dual meet pin. No. 5 Madison Sandquist (155) picked up a forfeit for Sacred Heart.

Three of the 10 bouts were contested with Sacred Heart winning all three with two pins to secure the win. New Jersey City had a pair of forfeit wins, which are worth five points each in collegiate women’s wrestling.

In the second match, No. 15 Lock Haven earned the first dual meet victory in their program’s history with a 33-11 win over the Pioneers. Lock Haven (2-0) took advantage of five forfeits to secure the win.

Reed remained undefeated on the season (5-0) with a pin of Lock Haven’s Lacey Hums in 1:48. Pascual (143) picked up a forfeit win for the Pioneers but Sandquist (10-3) was pinned by Madison Matta in 5:12. Vanase (136) dropped a 7-1 decision.

Sacred Heart hosts their only dual meet of the season at home on Monday, Dec. 13 when they welcome Elmira for a 4 p.m. match at the Pitt Center in Fairfield and tangle with New Jersey City for a second time at 6 p.m.
