NHSCA hopes to hold national tournaments in late May in Virginia Beach

The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) said Friday that they would hold their annual high school national wrestling tournaments on Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

The rapid spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 is causing havoc around the world and the postponement of sporting events across the nation and the world.

As of Friday, there have been more than 132,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 123 countries and more than 5,000 people have died, according to the World Health Organization. Multiple states here in the United States are under a state of emergency.

The 31st annual NSCHA tournament includes Senior National, Junior National, Sophomore National and Freshman National tournaments along with a girls high school division and a middle school division. They were originally to be held on March 26-28.

The rescheduled date is nine weeks away. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidance on Sunday that recommends large events of more than 50 people throughout the United States be cancelled or postponed for the next eight weeks. This includes conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings and other type of large gatherings.

On Sunday night, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont closed all schools throughout the state at least March 31.

More details are available from the NHSCA.
