Girls wrestling will be 30th sport offered by SCC next winter
The Southern Connecticut Conference has voted unanimously to host a girls wrestling postseason tournament, the league reported in a news release on June 2.
The SCC will become the second league to host a girls tournament. The Central Connecticut Conference hosted their first girls wrestling tournament last February. No team scores were kept at the CCC event.
The SCC’s Board of Governors voted to establish girls wrestling as the 30th sanctioned sport in the SCC. In recent years, girls have gotten the opportunities to wrestle for a CIAC state championship and a New England championship and a few girls-only events.
“This is an exciting and meaningful step for our league,” said Al Carbone, commissioner of the Southern Connecticut Conference. “Girls wrestling continues to grow at an impressive pace, and our student‑athletes deserve a postseason championship competition. Thank you to Amity Regional athletic director and SCC wrestling chairperson Ernie Goodwin for leading this effort.”
The inaugural SCC girls wrestling championship will debut during the 2026–27 winter season, providing opportunities for athletes to compete for individual and team honors.
In February, a team from Milford, consisting of girls from Foran, Jonathan Law and Platt Tech, came together to wrestle and win a dual meet with girls team from Trumbull, 48-23.
The Amity girls finished sixth at this year’s New England championships in Providence and Foran has been the host of the Queen of the Mat girls-only tournament for the past four years. Queen of the Mat was the state’s first girls-only tournament when it began in 2023.
Through the years, girls have been welcome to compete in wrestling but they have had to compete against the boys. Up until the past few years, there were literally no girls-only tournaments at the high school level in Connecticut.
