Outlook: Ponaganset, RI has been the class of New England for the past few years, earning national recognition. Two years ago, Xavier scored what would have been a New England record (149) in the tournament and still lost by 60 points to Ponaganset. The Chieftains won their fourth straight Rhode Island title last weekend with four champions and six finalists. They will have 7 wrestlers in the tournament. They’re still strong but are they as strong as they have been in the past?
Who can challenge? Look for Central Catholic High out of Lawrence, Mass. The Raiders won the Massachusetts’ All-State title on Monday with four individual champions and will have seven wrestlers in the tournament. Xavier will have eight wrestlers in the tournament while Ridgefield will have five.
Spaulding, Vermont, who ended Mt. Anthony Union’s 36-year state championship winning streak, qualified nine wrestlers. New Hampshire champion Timberlane Regional qualified seven wrestlers.
In the end, wins, pins and major decisions make the difference. Victories mean points and the tournament is generally decided by the success of teams in the consolation bracket. … Ponaganset’s Cole Lemovitz (113) and Shawsheen Valley’s James Tildsley (150) are both seeking their third straight New England title. A third New England title earns them a spot in the New England Wrestling Hall of Fame.
More news: The last time the New England tournament was in Connecticut was 2011 in New Haven at Hillhouse. … Timberlane Regional from Plaistow, N.H. holds the tournament record with 10 New England titles, most recently in 2012. Mt. Anthony is second with nine New England titles, with their most recent title in 2015. … Ponaganset is looking to be the first Rhode Island program to win four consecutive New England titles. The last team to win four straight New England titles was Timberlane Regional (NH), who won five in a row from 2008-12.
