Four state wrestlers earn medals at women’s national championship meet
Four wrestlers with Connecticut ties earned All-American honors at the USA Wrestling’s women’s national championship meet and world team trials in Spokane, Washington.
Norwalk’s Calli Gilchrist, a senior at Choate Rosemary Hall, finished sixth at 55 kilograms in the Under 20 (U20) tournament with Southbury’s Sarah Henckel, a junior at Blair Academy in New Jersey, finished seventh at 72 kilograms, also in U20.
Sacred Heart University’s Madison Sandquist and Love Daley each earned All-American honors in the U23 tournament at 76 kilograms.
Gilchrist went 4-3 and finished sixth at 55 kg (121 pounds). She won her first two matches with a technical fall and pin before falling to eventual national champion Everest Leydecker of Arizona by technical fall, 10-0 in the quarterfinals.
Gilchrist, who will be attending Brown in the fall, went 2-2 in the consolation round with two pins. Minnesota’s Aspen Blasko scored 10 unanswered points to beat Gilchrist, 12-8 and California’s Elene Ivadica beat Gilchrist, 10-5 to finish fifth.
Henckel went 3-2 in the tournament at 72 kg or 158 pounds. She finished the tournament with a 12-2 win by technical fall in 3:56 over No. 8 seed Julianna Kilroy of Washington to finish seventh.
Sandquist, a four-time collegiate All-American from Humble Texas, finished fifth at 76 kg (167 pounds) with an 8-3 win over Daley. Sandquist went 3-2 in the tournament with a pair of wins over Daley. She also beat Daley with a pin in 4:30 in the quarterfinals.
Sandquist lost in the semifinals to Colorado’s Tristan Kelly by pin in 4:13.
Daley, a sophomore from Baltimore, went 3-3 in the tournament with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket to finish sixth.
