No. 11 Coast Guard tops WPI in season opener
NEW LONDON, Nov. 6, 2021 — All-Americans Tony Ulaszek and Paul Detwiler each recorded pins in under one minute leading No. 11 Coast Guard to a season-opening 36-6 win over WPI on Saturday. WPI would win the first match at 125 and the last match at heavyweight, but the Bears would win the eight others.
Kenji Beato won 5-4 at 133 to tie the match 3-3 before Anthony Martin won 11-6 at 141 to give the Bears a 6-3 lead.
All-American Noah Caskey of Montville (149) won by technical fall 18-1 in 4:17 before Ulaszek needed just 45 seconds to register a pin at 157 to give the Bears a 17-3 lead.
Avon High graduate Chris Gens (275) made his collegiate wrestling debut for WPI and earned a 9-7 win over Coast Guard’s Tim Ganuncio in overtime. WPI did not wrestle a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Coast Guard is back in action at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday.
